In the Great Northwest, chances are your older wooden sashes are made of old growth, straight grain fir. (In the East, most older sashes are made from pine - not as good as fir for sashes!) With the relatively low humidity of the region, most of these wooden sashes are in great shape, and only need new insulated glass and weather stripping to meet modern energy effeciency standards.
